Humble Beginnings

Walter C. Bender began his career in the business world in 1888, at the age of 14, as a clerk in the H. M. Garlick Wholesale Company. I believe the Garlick Wholesale Company was located at 3rd and Felix. Two years later, he was a clerk for Eugene Soper Drugs at 5th and Francis. In 1895, he began as a druggist at the Central Drug Company, located at 321 N 9th. In 1898, he became the owner. Then in 1908, he relocated the business to 11th and Frederick.

Sometime around WWI the Central Drug Company went out of business and Walter worked at Herman's Drug Store until 1934. In 1934, Walter opens Bender's Prescription Shop at 619 Francis Street. Just a note here, Tom Schoeneck was born January 1934. Walter Bender died March 12, 1944. After Walters death, his wife, Emma maintained ownership of Benders and his daughter, Sarah, operated the drug store until 1965 when it was sold to Tom Schoeneck. In January 1976, Bender's moved to 1341 Village Drive, and then to 3829 Frederick. I started working at Bender's in June 1982. On January 1st 1999 Scott Schoeneck, Shawn Schoeneck and I bought Bender's Prescription Shop. On January 1st 2015 Scott and Shawn Left Benders. Gary Schermerhorn is now proud of owner of Bender's Prescription Shop.
